Dropbox: What It Is and Why You Need It.

If you have never heard of the amazing utility known as Dropbox, you are seriously missing out.

Dropbox is basically a storage program. Sign up is free, as is the Basic account. You can upgrade to Pro for a small fee, but you get lots more space.  More info after the break!





One thing I love about Dropbox basic is the ammount of storage you get for free. After completing the tour, as well as a couple of other little tasks on the site4, you are rewarded with 2 GBs of space. Now, if you are just images and mp3s in there, that's a LOT of space! Because it's online, your files are safe even if the unthinkable happens and your hard drive crashes. However, it's also private. The only people who can get in are the people that you allow in through a neat little share link.

If you are like me, however, and use the program to store installation files for programs, it can fill up rather quickly. One option is, of course, to upgrade to Pro. If the economy is hitting you like it is me, however, there IS a way to get more space for free. I'll get to that in a moment.

When you download the program, you get a little icon on your Desktop. You can drag files to it and drop them in. As long as you have an internet connection, the program will upload the files to your Dropbox account. Later on, if you are on another device and want to show off that cute picture of your dog, you can go to the site, download the file, and proceed to make your friends go "D'aaaaaaaawwwwwww!"

Overall, Dropbox is one of the few programs that I consider an absolute must have. Based on, the name of this article, it's easy to guess what my Approval Rating is.

Ok, now I'm going to tell you how to get more space for free. Dropbox has this neat little referral program. For every person that signs up through your referral, you get an extra 500 MBs of storage space. You can earn a maximum 16 GBs , which is a LOT. I've seen hard drives that come with less space!
